The clenched fist

The clenched fist is an important historical piece of African artwork. A clenched fist or a fist held up high represents unity and pride in black power. A clenched fist is usually shown as a black fist held up high. The Black Panthers used the clenched fist as a self defence symbol.

The clenched fist was significant to choose because it shows, even after all we have been through as black people we will still rise up and hold our fists up high. Not to fight or as a threat but for pride in who we war as black people. Taking pride in who we are will also honer those black who have went through hard times in the slave days. I feel its important students know more about the clenched fist because if they see a black fist and not know the history behind it they may feel like blacks just feel they have power over everyone which is not the case. Students may look at the fists and make more stereotypes about blacks. I feel like its important for students to get the proper understanding of a black fist for their own good and so they can also go on to teach others about the real meaning behind a black clenching fist. It makes things more relevant to the students in the TDSB because the black fist is more of an urban symbol more than a historical piece of art work. It will stand out to the students more and i feel its very important for the students to know what they are looking at.
